[ Memory bias ]: In psychology and cognitive science, a memory bias is a cognitive bias that either enhances or impairs the recall of a memory

A book documenting a headpiece I created as a solution to problems within my family focusing on six memory biases: fading affect bias, rosy retrospection, illusory bias, self-serving bias, persistence, and leveling/sharpening.

-------------------------

My family is experiencing some new changes. During these brief shifts and moments of unrest, memories or old stores often arise. However, with time the content of these memories are prone to alteration and unintended modifications- causing conflicts within the family. Such adjustments to memory are known as memory biases. I chose six memory biases that were most relevant to the problems within my family, and conveyed them into visual graphics: fading affect bias, rosy retrospection, illusory bias, self-serving bias, persistence, and leveling/sharpening.

I decided to explore this issue through creating a headpiece that held a piece of transparency film in front of the user’s face- partially obscuring their own vision as well as allowing those around them to see the memory bias graphics on it. There are six pieces of film, each representing one of the six memory biases that are interchangeable, allowing the user to wear the one most closely associated with their own memory bias. This tool seeks to repair relationships by raising awareness to this issue, permitting everyone to recognize these biases and structure their conversations and relationships with these issues in mind.

I have created a book documenting both the process and final product of this project. It contains the inspiration and early drafts as well as the final documentation images for the headpiece. Through creating a printed piece, I can fully relay the intended aesthetic for this project as well as incorporate the necessary text to explain the concept behind it.
